Ethoxyquin is a notorious pet food preservative for being called the cause of cancer in a vast amount of dogs and other mammals. In large amounts, it actually acts as a toxin to these dogs. Many with hermit crabs have also reported adverse effects on their hermit crab after molting while it was consuming ethoxyquin-containing food. However, at this time, there hasn't been any scientific studies to prove ethoxyquin to be the cause of these effects. Ethoxyquin is only approved for pet food consumption in the United States; it is not approved for human consumption at all.
